A shareware text and Appleworks file utility

Texter is a quick and easy text and Appleworks file utility which will
display text to either the 40 or the 80 column screen, send text to
the printer, find specific text in a specific file, or delete
specified files. Most of Texter's features will work on any 64K Apple
II.
The chief advantage of Texter is that its ease of use makes it
much easier and quicker to print or read text or Appleworks files than
to use a word processor for the same purpose.
Texter is built around Dogpaw, Karl Bunker's public domain
machine language routine which Texter uses to display, print, or find
text. Dogpaw must always be present in the same directory as Texter
when Texter is run.
Texter uses a file tab interface by which you use the arrow keys
to select functions, disk drives, and files. You rarely have to type
when using Texter.
The program will print text with a one inch left margin,
depending on the characteristics of the file. If you've download text
from an information service, each line is likely to be followed by a
carriage return (hard formatted). In this situation, if a margin is
printed, normal sized lines will often be interspersed with lines of
only a word or two. The resulting document makes for difficult
reading indeed. Texter has a routine that counts the carriage returns
in text files. If the program finds more than one carriage return per
100 characters, it will assume the document is probably hard formatted
and will print without the margin. Appleworks files, on the other
hand, are usually soft formatted and are always printed with the
margin.
When Texter is finished with a file, it will ask you if you want
do do the same operation on another file in the same directory. Press
<RETURN> and the current directory will be shown so that you can
process another file. This is helpful when, for example, you have a
whole string of text files to print.
Texter will run on any Apple that can use ProDOS. The only
features that need additional equipment are TEXT TO 80 COLUMN SCREEN
and FIND TEXT (80 COL) both of which require an 80 column card. The
eighty column card is sold with most Apple IIe machines and is built
into the Apple IIc and Apple II GS computers.
If you're using Texter on an Apple II GS, your Control Panel
should probably read : Buffering: No. This is the default setting.
Texter is only one of many programs that has trouble when the
Control Panel selection for buffering is Yes. One problem that pops
up when Control Panel buffering is enabled appears with the
Imagewriter II equipped with the 32K memory option. Things are fine
until the 32K buffer is filled. However, any part of the file that
will not fit into this 32 K will not print. With buffering set to No,
there's no problem.
When using FIND TEXT (80 COL) the program will scan each page
until it finds the text that you are looking for. It will mark the
line containing this text by highlighting the first letter of that
line with an inverse block.
When using any of Texter's features, should you find yourself in
a place that you don't want to be, <ESC> will either take you back to
the main menu or back you up just enough so that you can try again.
This program incorporates portions of The Toolbox Series, a
copyrighted product of Roger Wagner Publishing, Inc.
Thanks to Karl Branch for testing the program and special thanks
to Karl Bunker for creating Dogpaw in the first place and for his
constant guidance in the development of Texter.
Texter is Shareware. A contribution of $5.00 is requested. Half of
the shareware fee will go to Karl Bunker, author of Dogpaw.
